Bob Neill, Tory Party Vice-Chair and MP, has been touting himself around the press today, after suggesting that the police should be looking into selections in Lewisham Deptford and Ilford North as well as Falkirk. The Labour Party hit back saying that Neill is “wasting police time”. That may well be true, but it’s also interesting that while Neill is taking such a great interest in Labour Party selections, he’s taking far less interest in Tory Party selections.
As Political Scrapbook reported earlier today:
One of the Conservative Party’s safest councils is in open civil war after thirteen serving councillors were deselected for 2014 elections. The purge by Romford Tories includes five cabinet members and the current mayor of the London borough of Havering.
In developments which mirror the Labour Party’s recent difficultires with the Falkirk selection, two cabinet members have already complained to CCHQ about alleged breaches of selection protocol, including the use of block ‘proxy votes’.
And why should this be of particular interest to Bob Neill? Well he was a Romford councillor for sixteen years and represented the area on the GLC. As a senior party figure (vice-chair, no less) – surely he should be involved in trying to sort out the mess in what was once his own back yard, rather than stirring up trouble for Labour?
Or is that too much to ask?
