Labour campaigns in all 106 target seats – but where were the Tories?

Senior Labour figures have hailed the party’s “Cost of Cameron” day as a success, after campaign events took place in all 106 target seats this weekend. In all 125 key seat events took place (a record in a single day outside election time in recent memory) as well as dozens of additional events in non-key seats.

Online, the party saw a spike in social media traffic around the event, with 12,251 tweets using #CostofCameron in the past 7 days (including 6,625 tweets on Saturday), and over 1.1 million people were reached through Facebook alone over the past seven days.

The party clearly saw the campaign weekend as a success, and Michael Dugher – who co-ordinated the day of action, will be reporting back to the Shadow Cabinet tomorrow. But Labour are particularly keen to draw a distinction between Labour’s campaign on the ground, and the absence of a Tory ground game, and in particular are asking “where is Grant Shapps?”. Speaking to us this evening Dugher said:

“Labour demonstrated our digital and on-the-ground strength on Saturday, but what was noticeable was the complete absence of Grant Shapps and the Tory Party. When was the last time anyone saw the Tories out campaigning? You can’t run an election campaign sat round the pool in Chequers. While the Tories are busy talking to themselves, Labour will be out campaigning across the country on our plans to tackle Britain’s cost of living crisis.”
