Politics and Parliament have lost a great man today, but anyone who knew Paul Goggins will feel the loss.
Paul’s death, so young at just 60 years of age, deprives politics and parliament of enormous experience and dignity. My thoughts are with his family at this very sad and difficult time for them.
I’ve known Paul since first becoming an MP back in 2005, and it has been a pleasure to call him a colleague and friend.
He always brought great authority to debates, committees and meetings. He campaigned on many issues; from helping sufferers of mesothelioma to the care of the vulnerable. His advocacy and defence of the work of the probation service is well known but his recent speech, just before Christmas, during an Opposition Day debate was a master class to witness. His devastating critique of the current government’s plans both captivated and silenced the chamber.
Whichever role he held in government – home affairs, justice, Northern Ireland – he always left behind a legacy of respect and fondness amongst those he worked with. He was liked by MPs on all sides of the House – no mean achievement in the bear pit of Westminster politics, and a clear sign of his kindness and warmth as a person.
I am still in shock and will miss him and his counsel enormously.
