Labour MP John Mann has called for UKIP to ditch an MEP candidate who compared the EU to the Nazis on social media.
On the 10th February Nigel Wickens – a UKIP candidate in the East Midlands – tweeted:
“Congratulations to Switzerland regarding the free movement of people. You defied nazi germany, now defy the equally disgusting EU.”
Mann, who is the chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Anti Semitism said that Wickens’ comments were “beyond belief:
“How can any decent human being compare the European Union to Nazi Germany. You don’t have to like the EU but to compare it to a regime that orchestrated the deaths of 6 million Jews and others is beyond belief.”
“These comments clearly show that Nigel Wickens is not fit for public office. I suggest he visits Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre to see what the Nazi regime did and get a true sense of perspective regarding the European Union.”
“I am calling on Nigel Farage to remove him from his party immediately. The voters of the East Midlands deserve better than this.”
Wickens is a bit of a loose cannon – he also appears to suggest that the EU is inciting anti-government violence in the Ukraine, and tweeted a bizarre conspiracy theory “People who seriously get in Tony Blair’s way seem to end up dead” (and that’s just his tweets in the last couple of weeks…).
