LabourList readers think party members should be given a greater say in what policies are presented to the electorate next year – but don’t know how to get involved in the process to do so.
Our weekly survey asked if you were going to take part in the National Policy Forum (NPF) process, in the run up to the major NPF meeting in Milton Keynes this July. Almost half (48%) of the people surveyed said they would not, while 38% didn’t know.
This suggests that there is a level of disconnect between the grassroots and the Party’s largest attempt to include them in policy formation. We asked readers whether they knew how to take part in the process: 80% did not.
A similar number said they’d support members having a more input Labour’s 2015 manifesto, which would suggest that the lack of knowledge about how to take part isn’t through lack of interest.
The challenge for the Labour leadership then is to work out how – or if – Labour members and supporters can be more involved in the manifesto process in this final year. Clearly the NPF process, whilst providing an opportunity for some members, as well as affiliates and other stakeholders, isn’t working for members who want a say at the moment…
Keep an eye out for more results from the survey tomorrow, when we reveal whether Labour supporters want a vote on any potential coalition deal…
834 LabourList readers took part in the first of our weekly survey between Sunday and Tuesday. Thanks to everyone who took part.
