The renowned filmmaker, actor and Labour peer Richard Attenborough has died. He was 90. Attenborough was both a successful director – winning two academy awards for directing Gandhi – and a popular actor, appearing in Jurassic Park, Miracle on 34th Street and the Great Escape across a 45 year acting career. Attenborough – the brother of naturalist David – was made a peer by John Major in 1993, but immediately took up the Labour whip.
Responding to the news this morning, Ed Miliband said:
The death of Richard Attenborough is a sad day for the film world and the Labour movement. He and his work will be remembered.
Our thoughts are with Attenborough and his family today.
