Latest changes in Royal Mail collection times adds “insult to injury”, says Umunna

Today it’s emerged that Royal Mail will change collection times at 50,000 post boxes across the country in an effort to save money.

This change will mean that late collections, which are usually at 4pm or later, will be moved to an earlier time anywhere between the hours of 9am and 3pm depending on the post box.

Royal Mail have said that this is because fewer people are sending letters, meaning that many of the country’s post boxes “no longer covering their costs.”

However, Chuka Umunna the Shadow Business Secretary has said these latest changes provide more evidence that the government’s decision to sell off Royal Mail was misguided:

“In their unnecessary fire sale of Royal Mail, the Tory-led government put vital postal services at risk and, as many feared when the privatisation took place, we are now seeing consumers losing out,”

“This adds insult to injury after taxpayers were left short changed by hundreds of millions of pounds as the ‘priority’ City investors selected by the Tory-led government made a killing.”
