Are the Tories more likely to protect hedge funds than the NHS?

Well, yes – according to the people of Birmingham.

It’s been reported that in his speech tomorrow David Cameron will attempt to claw back some legitimacy for the Tories when it comes to the NHS. But, it looks like Cameron’s latest policy announcement (where he’ll promise that by 2020 everyone in England will be able to access a GP every day of the week) will do little to undo the public’s belief that the Tories can’t be trusted with the NHS – perhaps unsurprising after five years of underfunding and privatisation.

In response, Labour’s Shadow Health Minister Andrew Gwynne went to Birmingham to find out whether people on the streets thought the Tories’ priority was to protect the NHS or hedge funds. The results speak for themselves:

Gwynne said that the response of people in Birmingham proves that people up and down the country know you ‘still can’t trust the Tories with the NHS’:

“Despite promising to protect the NHS, under David Cameron our cherished service is going backwards.

“David Cameron’s record on the NHS speaks for itself. One-in-four patients are waiting a week or more for a GP appointment. Waiting lists for treatment are at their highest level for six years. Thousands of frontline NHS staff have been lost while £3 billion has been wasted on a damaging reorganisation they promised wouldn’t happen. At the same David Cameron has been standing up for a privileged few, cutting taxes for millionaires and giving hedge funds, who donate millions to the Tories, a tax cut worth £145 million.

“Only Labour has a plan to support everyday working people, saving and transforming our NHS and raising living standards for all.”
