Labour call for parliamentary vote on the gender pay gap

Today Labour are going to call for a parliamentary vote on the gender pay gap. After new evidence shows that over their life women on average earn £209,976 less than men.

To coincide with the vote, Grazia magazine, in partnership with Unite, will hold a rally in Westminster. Gwen Davis, Sheila Douglass and Vera Sime – who were among the original Ford Dagenham workers that went on strike for equal pay – are expected to attend.

In addition to this, Sarah Champion the Labour MP for Rotherham will put forward legislation that would make it compulsory for large companies to make public the disparity between men’s and women’s pay.

Gloria De Piero, Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, who will lead the rally, explained the reason for building momentum behind this vote:

“Women are losing out on hundreds of thousands of pounds because they still earn less than men over their lifetime. Labour will call a vote on Tuesday to bring about pay transparency, it’s time the Tories and Lib Dems demonstrated their commitment to delivering equal pay and vote with us.”
