Labour to announce tuition fees cut this week?

We’ve been writing about the possibility of a Labour announcement on tuition fees for months now, and according to the Sunday Times, the announcement could be coming this week.

Previous reports had suggested that Labour will announce a tuition fees cut (down to £6,000 a year) with a long-term move to a graduate tax planned.

The Sunday Times quotes a source as saying(£):

“The clever thing to do would be to announce a review to consider bringing in £6,000 fees. That way they avoid difficult questions about how the policy will be paid for, but still get the electoral benefits.”

Surely the “clever thing to do” would be to work out how to pay for this before announcing it? And the “clever thing to do” is rarely to give daft quotes like this to the papers…
