It’s expected that Ed Miliband will announce in the coming days that Labour would cut university tuition fees from £9,000 to £6,000 a year.
As we reported over the weekend, it looks like the Labour leader will say that the party would fund this by cutting pension tax relief for wealthier older people. This would put a cap the amount of peoples’ pensions that would be class as tax free.
Miliband will make this announcement as a speech to the Engineering Employers Federation on Thursday, in which it’s been said he’ll lay out how Labour would ensure that young people have better prospects. Update: We now understand that Miliband won’t make an announcement in his EEF speech. However it appears that the Labour leader may be speaking in Leeds on Friday – so any announcement could happen then…
However some are saying the way the party are planning on paying for the reduction in tuition fees could negatively impact on the proportion of the vote they receive from older people, who are more likely to vote in May.
We’ll keep you updated on further developments.
