Did David Cameron use his speech on steps of Downing St to attack Labour with “totally made up figures”?

David Cameron Downing St Number 10

After visiting the Queen at noon today to confirm the dissolution of Parliament, David Cameron made an election campaign speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street, where he accused Labour of planning to raise taxes for working families by £3,000.

However, Labour have accused Cameron of using invented statistics for his claim. Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury Chris Leslie responded to his comments by saying:

“These are totally made up figures from a desperate David Cameron who has raised taxes on working people.”

On this afternoon’s World at One on Radio 4, Paul Johnson from the independent Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) said that Cameron’s claims amounted to a “not terrible helpful number”. It seems even they are not sure where Labour’s supposed tax bombshell is coming from.

Last week, Labour ruled out raising VAT, National Insurance, and both the lower and higher rates of income tax – but are committed to raising the top rate of income tax, applying a tax on bankers’ bonuses, and introducing the Mansion Tax.
