Labour politicians don’t always want to make tax an election issue – but Ed Balls is this morning trying to make tax cuts for some of Britain’s biggest earners part of the election debate. In an article for the Sunday Mirror, the Shadow Chancellor writes:
“David Cameron and George Osborne must come clean this weekend. If they carry on refusing to rule out another tax cut for millionaires people will conclude that’s exactly what they’re planning.”
Does anyone else sense a trap for Osborne that he might struggle to avoid?
Update: Osborne was on Murnaghan this morning – where the tax question was asked four times and Osborne wouldn’t answer it. Here’s what Shadow Chief Secretary Chris Leslie had to say:
“The Conservative Party’s secret plan has now been exposed. Asked four times, George Osborne repeatedly refused to rule out another top-rate tax cut for millionaires. The Tories have raised taxes for millions but cut them for millionaires. And it’s now clear that if they win the election they’ll do the same again. While Labour’s better and fairer plan will back tax cuts for working people, these same old Tories always stand up for the few.”
Although Labour should be aware that Osborne also refused to rule out a VAT rise, before Cameron ruled one out just days later…
