Party supporters want Miliband to stay leader even if Labour don’t form the next government

Ed Miliband

What will happen after May 7th? The constant speculation over this question will surely continue until the outcome is clear. But, an understandable verdict doesn’t just boil down to who will form the next government.

It’s also about what the parties leaders will do if they aren’t part of the next government. YouGov have done a poll for the Times Red Box to find out what party supporters would like leaders to do in this eventuality. They asked: If the Labour party do not form a government after the general election do you think Ed Miliband should remain leader or should he resign and let someone else take over as Labour leader?

A larger proportion (48%) of Labour supporters would want Miliband to remain leader  than would want him to step down (39%).

When asked this same question about Cameron, 60% of Tory voters wanted him to stay on in comparison to 31% who didn’t – an unlikely prospect giving his announcement earlier this year.

For Nick Clegg, Lib Dem 46% of voters said they’d rather be would stay puy vs 34% who said they wouldn’t.
