Highly respected new MP Keir Starmer has announced his support for Rushanara Ali in the race for deputy leader. The former Director of Public Prosecutions will be considered a major coup for Ali, as Starmer has already gathered a healthy following among supporters – with a campaign even being set up urging him to run for lader last month.
Starmer says he will endorse his fellow London MP for deputy leader due to her experience of reaching out to communities:
“I am backing Rushanara because of her track record on reaching out to people from all communities and backgrounds and her ability to win in challenging political environments.
“Labour needs to turn outwards not inwards and Rushanara has the skills to take us forward.”
“Keir’s endorsement is fantastic news and I am proud to be receiving support from across the Labour Party. With nominations closing on Wednesday we continue to push and make progress towards the 35 nominations required.”
