Tim Roache yesterday announced he’s standing to be the next General Secretary of GMB Union.
GMB is one of the country’s biggest trade unions and is affiliated to the Labour party. The current General Secretary is Paul Kenny, who was first elected in 2006 (after serving as acting general Secretary since March 2005) and then re-elected in 2010. Although there were rumours in 2013 that Kenny was going to stand down prior to the end of his term, this did not come to fruition. But it seems he will be not be standing for re-selection.
Roache announced yesterday on Twitter that he would be seeking nomination to be the next General Secretary:
YES I Am proud to say I am accepting nominations to be GMB General Secretary @Kevin_Maguire@GMBPolitics#GMBhttps://t.co/WTwzhVwd6b

Roache is currently the GMB Regional Secretary for Yorkshire & North Derbyshire, he is also Chair of Elmet and Rothwell Labour party and President of the think tank Class.
His announcement has been met with praise from newly-elected MP for Sheffield Heeley Louise Haigh and for Leeds East Richard Burgon.
