Kendall reveals open letter to members with new campaign video

Liz Kendall

Liz Kendall has released a new video to publicise a letter going out to every Labour member this week. The leadership hopeful is shown at her London campaign office setting out her vision, and why she wants the top job.

In the letter, which you can read in full here, Kendall outlines the five main policy areas her leadership bid prioritises, which she first revealed last week. They include tackling inequality in early years, eliminating low pay and taking action on climate change. A Kendall campaign spokesperson said the two-minute video was intended to show what motivates the candidate “in her own words”.

You can watch the video here:

In the letter, Kendall writes:

“You probably think I’m writing to ask you for your vote in the upcoming election for party leader. And I am.

“But what really matters for our country and our party is another election – the one we’ll fight together in 2020. By then, our country will have suffered under five more years of the Tories.

“I’m standing to be Labour’s first woman leader – and Prime Minister – because I love our party too much to see us lose again.

“Like you, I am Labour because I want Britain to be more equal. And our party is the greatest champion of equality and opportunity our country has ever known. The NHS. Sure Start. The minimum wage. The longer we’re out of power, the more these great successes are put at risk.

“I offer the fresh start our party needs to regain the trust of voters who’ve turned their backs on us.

“We need to win. I want you to be part of a winning team. I won’t rest until we put our values into action in government because when Labour wins, so does our country. So I ask you to vote for me, as the candidate best placed to achieve this.”

Releasing the video, her campaign said it showed their focus “on the only question that matters”, which is finding the candidate best placed to “ensure Labour wins in 2020”. They said:

“This is Liz setting out in her own words why she wants to be leader, the values that motivate her and the causes she would fight for.

“In the run in to ballot papers going out Liz will have a laser-like focus on the only question that matters in this election: who is the best candidate to ensure Labour wins in 2020.

“The film is a deliberate move to cut through all the name calling there has been and show the real Liz delivering her vision straight to members.”
