Among the many contentious decisions taken on by the NEC this week was to suspend all regular Constituency Labour Party (CLP) and local party branch meetings for the duration of the leadership elections. The only meetings permitted until the end of September are ones to discuss making a nomination in the leadership contest or to organise campaigning for upcoming elections.
The decision was taken, in part, due to what one NEC member described to me as “unprecedented” scale of reports of intimidation, bullying and harassment in Labour Party meetings.
However, since the dispute over Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the party arose in the aftermath of the EU referendum result, many CLPs have discussed and passed motions on the subject.
The results could give us an early indication of how popular Corbyn remains with members – and it appears to be good news for him. Both pro- and anti-Corbyn groups have been collecting the names of constituencies that have had confidence votes in the leader, and the majority seem to be in Corbyn’s favour.
Pro-Corbyn supporters claim that over 80 CLPs have backed Corbyn, while rebels say that almost 20 have so far expressed their desire for him to step down. However, rebels also claim that activists have contacted MPs in a number of other CLPs to express their loss of confidence in the leadership, including in places where strong support for Corbyn would have been expected, such as Newcastle, Oxford and Manchester.
Here’s the full list of CLPs we know to have had voted on confidence in Corbyn’s leadership – if we’ve missed yours, or you’ve spotted an error, please do get in touch at [email protected]
