Council by-elections: Labour vote share up as Independent holds in Southend

Labour’s vote share increased slightly as an independent held onto a ward in Southend last night.

The Labour vote was up 4.3 points, in third place with 16.2 per cent of the vote, and the Tories vote increased 4.7 points to 35.2 per cent. It was the only ward contested yesterday.

This comes as polls released overnight show the Tories lead over Labour narrowing – with YouGov giving just a five point lead for Theresa May’s governing party.

Independent hold
Independent: 37.6 per cent (+1.0)
Conservatives: 35.2 per cent (+4.7)
Labour: 16.2 per cent (+4.3)
UKIP: 5.1 per cent (-10.4)
Liberal Democrat: 5.1 per cent (+2.5)
Green: 0.8 per cent (-2.1)
