Momentum on course for NEC victory as CLP nominations close

Over the last few weeks, constituency Labour parties (CLPs) have been nominating their preferred candidates for the national executive committee (NEC).

Although the nominations aren’t binding, this initial process excludes candidates who are not able to gain the support of five CLPs including their own, and the numbers are often indicative of the final result.

There are nine places representing CLPs up for grabs on Labour’s ruling body, and we now know 26 candidates will be on the ballot paper.

The Corbynite slate of candidates backed by Momentum, Campaign for Labour Party Democracy (CLPD), Centre-Left Grassroots Alliance (CLGA) and other groups on the left of the party have stormed ahead with between 248 and 192 nominations each. According to one Momentum source, the vote split this year is favourable to the Labour left by 4.5:1 compared to 3:1 last year.

Ann Black gained the support of 174 CLPs. Labour activists who may be considered on the ‘soft left’ of the party – particularly members of Open Labour, the only group to have endorsed Black – are also pleased.

Those standing for the NEC who are backed by Corbynsceptic groups Progress and Labour First gathered between 65 and 22 nominations from local parties. Pro-EU, Corbynsceptic independent candidate Eddie Izzard cut in the middle with 44.

Finally, six entirely independent (and not famous, unlike Izzard) candidates managed to reach the threshold for nominations and members will be able to vote for them once ballots are sent out (online or by post).

This is the full list of candidates in order of how many supporting nominations they have received.
