PMQs: Corbyn wins on Brexit again as May refuses to answer a single question

Sienna Rodgers

Today we saw Jeremy Corbyn’s best PMQs performance yet in another clear win for the Labour leader on Brexit. When he opts for a narrow focus on the government’s negotiations with the EU and with itself, Corbyn successfully highlights just how absurdly shambolic Tory Brexit has become.

In her typical style, Theresa May failed to answer a single question and used her tired tactic of repeating a truism in response to each query. Today, that self-evident statement was “this government is delivering on the vote of the British people”. She also accused Labour of “frustrating” the process of Brexit. Ironically, a group of Remainers on the opposition benches would like this to be true, but it patently is not.

Will the promised “detailed, ambitious and precise” white paper detailing the government’s negotiating position be published in advance of the EU withdrawal debate next week? Will it be published before the crucial EU summit in June?

Which of the Brexit sub-committees have met? When will they report to the cabinet? Will we be told about it? Have they decided between the customs partnership proposal and the ‘max fac’ idea? Is the government still considering David Davis’ new ‘buffer zone’ idea?

Corbyn touched on all of these issues, but May didn’t – so we’re still none the wiser. The Labour leader did deliver several killer lines during this PMQs session, however. Here are the top three:

  • “It’s not the opposition negotiating Brexit but sadly it’s not the government either.”
  • “When it comes to Brexit, this government has delivered more delays and more cancellations than Northern Rail.”
  • “What does the Prime Minister think will last longer – the Northern Rail franchise or her Premiership?”
