English actor Hugh Grant joined Faiza Shaheen’s rally in Chingford and Woodford Green on Wednesday night, where he encouraged local residents to vote Labour and kick out “ghastly” Tory incumbent Iain Duncan Smith.
The rally did not go entirely to plan, as one activist heckled to ask whether Grant could be trusted in light of his support for Luciana Berger in Finchley and Golders Green – where Labour is in second place behind the Tories according to recent polls.
Addressing the question of trust, Grant joked that there was “no good reason at all” that he should be trusted. He explained that he was “terrified” of the Tories winning on December 12th and endorsed tactical voting to prevent such an outcome.
Later, a group of Jewish protesters interrupted the speeches to criticise the film star for supporting Labour amid criticisms of its handling of antisemitism complaints within the party.
Shaheen chose to intervene to answer the question instead of Grant. She apologised for the mistakes made by Labour, before noting that she had experienced Islamophobia during the local campaign.
