What are your ‘other reasons’ Mr Gove?

Update: We now have the footage of Gove’s remarks

The education secretary Michael Gove objects to the development of a mosque in his constituency. That is of course his prerogative. Yet Gove appears to be somewhat evasive with regard to his precise objections.

When asked by the BBC why he opposed the mosque yesterday, Gove listed some of his reasons, before saying:

“because of the way in which it would overlook the royal military academy, (the mosque) would also not be appropriate for all sorts of other reasons.”

To some this may sound like Gove is backing some of his constituents who have highlighted unspecified “security concerns” about having a minaret close to the royal military academy. Yet the QC representing the group who wish to redevelop the site argues:

“I have seen what I regard as utterly irresponsible statements that there is clear view of the Royal Military Academy. It is not remotely and has never been the case.”

Either Michael Gove should state why he considers a mosque to be a security concern, or he should state his “other reasons” clearly and openly. To do anything else is iresponsible for a politician with such a high profile.
