Danny Alexander’s bragging over the £10 billion tax raid on North Sea oil revenuehas landed him in hot water with Scottish Lib Dem colleagues, according to the Scotsman. One senior Lib Dem went as far as saying that the chief secretary to the treasury should resign over the issue.
Scottish Lib Dem MPs have also attacked Alexander. Gordon Lib Dem MP Malcom Bruce criticised Mr Alexander for being “economically illiterate” which could “kill off investment in the North Sea”, while West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP Sir Robert Smith warned that the tax will be “economically disastrous”.
If he were to resign, Alexander would be the second Lib Dem chief secretary to stand down. Although with rumours circulating that David Laws could be about to return to the government, perhaps Laws could be returning to his old role sooner than expected.
