Sir Alex Ferguson should contribute to Labour’s campaign team, says John Mann MP

Former Manchester United manager and football legend Sir Alex Ferguson should play a part in Labour’s General Election campaign team, according to a Labour MP. John Mann has written to Ed Miliband urging him to “invite Sir Alex Ferguson to contribute to the Labour Party’s campaign team ahead of the election in 2015”.

In a letter to the Labour leader, which we’ve reproduced below, Mann argues that:

“In addition to the undoubted morale boost, Sir Alex would shape and inspire a new generation of Labour Party activists, and provide unrivalled experience of management and long-term planning.”

Sir Alex – a lifelong Labour supporter – is believed to have been under consideration as a potential Labour peer earlier this year, and informal discussions between the party and the former United boss are believed to have taken place. However with the party looking for full-time “working peers”, it’s understood that Ferguson wasn’t able to commit the amount of time that would have been required.

Here’s John Mann’s letter in full:

Rt Hon Ed Miliband

House of Commons

London

Dear Ed,

May I firstly congratulate you on an excellent year as Leader of the Opposition.  I feel that the Labour Party is now setting the agenda, and the Government has no answer to the cost of living crisis.

I am writing to you to suggest that you invite Sir Alex Ferguson to contribute to the Labour Party’s campaign team ahead of the election in 2015. Having retired this year, as a phenomenally successful manager, Sir Alex is globally recognised as a superb leader.

In addition to the undoubted morale boost, Sir Alex would shape and inspire a new generation of Labour Party activists, and provide unrivalled experience of management and long-term planning.

With best wishes,

John Mann MP
