Alan Johnson admits he might lead Labour after Brown

In a candid interview with the New Statesman, new Home Secretary Alan Johnson has admitted that he might one day stand for the leadership of the Labour Party. The admission follows last month’s LabourList poll, in which 38% of Labour supporters said they would favour Johnson to replace Gordon Brown as Party leader.

Johnson said:

“I can’t look you in the eye and say, hand on heart, I will never be leader of the Labour Party…I’m not saying there are no circumstances.”

But he also reaffirmed his catagorical support for Gordon Brown as the current leader and Prime Minister, continuing:

“But I can look at you and say I do not believe I could do the job better than Gordon Brown. I don’t believe anyone could. I think it would be wrong to challenge Gordon – he is the best man for the job. I’m going to do everything I can to ensure that the party under its current leadership is successful.”
