Here is the text of an email sent by Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband to Labour party members today, with details on the agreements reached at last week’s G8, and the plans looking ahead to Copenhagen in December:
—
It has been a week since I wrote to you about what we could achieve together on Climate Change at the G8 summit.
The success of the summit – with an agreement to limit worldwide temperature rises to no more than 2C and to cut emissions by 80% by 2050 – was the result of pressure from the thousands of you who have signed up to the Copenhagen Pledge and others like you around the world.

Today, we’re setting out how real action on the international stage will be matched at home by making the changes needed to tackle Climate Change and to reap the rewards of a greener economy.
The UK Low Carbon Transition Plan, which I announced today, not only sets out how we will discharge our moral duty to leave a world in good working order for our children – but also how we can all benefit from the transition to the low-carbon economy. By acting now, we can see 1.2m people in green jobs by 2015, new green industries and a cleaner environment.

David Cameron has tried to change the Tories’ image by using green rhetoric and photo opportunities but he has opposed our measures and projects to tackle climate change and provide a secure energy supply for Britain.
The Tory party’s routine opposition to wind farm developments shows the shallowness and hypocrisy of Cameron’s green salesmanship. Britain and the world deserve better.
Today, we’ve set the standard for the kind of action that needs to be taken worldwide – but the pressure to roll this commitment out across the world needs to come from countless grassroots voices – including you.

Thanks,
Ed
