UPDATE: Sir Jock Stirrup also said yesterday that the conflict in Afghanistan could go on another four or five years.
Today’s “Sopel on Sunday” focuses, of course, on Remembrance Sunday and the situation in Afghanistan – where Jon Sopel has spent much of the last week.
Sir Jock Stirrup, the Chief of the Defence Staff, says:
“I don’t think our troops are defending the Afghan administration; our troops are defending our national interest. Of course, since our national interest relies upon a political solution in Afghanistan, then the position of the Afghan government, nationally and locally, is incredibly important. But throughout all of this, we should remember that that’s not why our troops are there – that’s incredibly important.”
On Sky News, Bob Ainsworth admits:
“British public opinion has been dented by the level of losses that we have received, but we cannot run a campaign like this off the back of an opinion poll. We have to presevere, we have to show some resolution. This campaign is directly connected to our safety back here in the United Kingdom. People need to recognise that; failure will be a disaster for us.”
General Jim Dutton is also interviewed, on the Politics Show.
