Over the last few weeks of snow, with our pavements frozen or covered in slush, I’ve often wondered how our councils justify where they choose to grit and where they don’t.
Recently, I went to the bank on the edge of a council estate. I slid down the road on the ice – and it took me three times as long as it normally would.
What would I have done if I was a pensioner? Stayed at home? Waited for a relative or carer to assist me?
If we strive for equality, then we should try to find solutions whereby the less able bodied – and the housebound – are properly cared for and able to get around in extreme weather as everyone else.
If we strive for eqaulity, more winter care for pensioners and the vulnerable is imperative.
