New Tory peer says cuts will encourage poor to breed

By Mark Ferguson / @markfergusonuk

David Cameron only appointed Howard Flight as a peer five days ago, but he’s already made a remarkable statement that calls Cameron’s judgement into question for appointing him. Speaking to the Evening Standard, Flight said:

“We’re going to have a system where the middle classes are discouraged from breeding because it’s jolly expensive, but for those on benefit there is every incentive.”

The outspoken right winger was axed as an MP in 2005 after suggesting that greater spending cuts were planned if the Tories won the election.

Douglas Alexander has since responded to Flight’s comments, saying:

“These shameful but revealing comments cast serious doubt over David Cameron’s judgement in personally appointing Howard Flight to the House of Lords only a few days ago.”
