Morning Report – March 28th

Morning reportAfter a furiously busy weekend, it’s back to the working week after the huge national protest on Saturday. Following the violence of a tiny minority on Saturday, Ed Miliband has predictably and depressingly come under fire from the Telegraph, in what reads less like a news report and more like a hatchet job. We’re more inclined to agree with Sir Michael White in the Guardian, who said “Britain shows it can still stage a decent demo – pity about the mob”.

Attempts to portray the Labour Party as supporters of such fringe elements are likely to fail though, when you consider that only two days later Ed Balls is writing for the Daily Mail. We’re no fans of the paper, its editorial line or its political priorities – but there appears to have been a softening of their economic views lately, and they’ve taken up Ed Miliband’s concerns about declining living standards with real gusto. How they react to future economic news will be telling.

Also in the Mail today, 64% of students say that their career advice was no help to them, which is especially important to note during a time of such high youth unemployment. The research was carried out by a group called FutureFirst – their project may be rolled out across the country soon, so keep an eye out for them.

Over at Political Betting, they’re asking if Labour could win 1000+ seats in the May 5th elections. That looks possible, expecially considering the poor position which the party are starting from. Expect some surprising results on the night.

And in a sign of tension within the coalition over the AV referendum, Chris Huhne has written to Sayeeda Warsi, accusing the No campaign of “gutter politics”. Two questions that immediately arise here – why didn’t he write to the PM, and is this part of Huhne’s manouvers to unseat Clegg?
