Today’s political news, for Labour people at least, risks being upstaged today as Ed Miliband confirms his engagement to his long-term partner Justine Thornton, and announces their wedding date. Congratulations to Ed and Justine from everyone at LabourList. This a wedding that interests us far more than another wedding in May we keep on hearing about. Surely a bank holiday for the Ed and Justine wedding is on the cards too? (Worth a try?)
Ed’s announcement might give today’s PMQs a slightly different feel to the one we might have been expecting. Cameron is likely to drop the spite and exchange it for smarm. Faux-friendship and best wishes all round. Expect battles to emerge though over fuel prices, the cost of living, EMA and of course the TUC rally.
Prize for the most ludicrous statement of the day (or at least very least, most ludicrous headline), goes – unsurprisingly – to Sayeeda Warsi in the Sun, with a nice, calm and measured “AV ‘will bring in fascism'”. Is the no campaign beginning to panic, or has Warsi just gone rogue. Either way that’s a bizarre viewpoint. The BNP oppose AV after all. Warsi is doubling up on the bad examples though. Today she plans to give an anti-AV speech near Cable Street.
And finally for this morning – whilst we’re talking about ludicrous comparisons – this one from Conservative Home – Boris as Churchill – takes the biscuit. The comparison Ed Balls makes in his interview with Mehdi Hasan – less of a statesman more of a buffoon – seems more accurate.
