Ed Miliband is looking to seize the initiative today, returning to a quiet and sleepy Westminster to hold an “urgent” press conference on the NHS. He’ll be joined by shadow health secretary John Healey, and shadow health minister Liz Kendal. We’re expecting that the party will be launching an attack on the government’s NHS “consultation” ahead of the local elections. Now may be the perfect time to ramp up pressure on the government, as Andrew Lansley faces a vote of no confidence from the Royal College of Nursing today. Stay tuned to LabourList – we’ll be bringing you live coverage of the Miliband/Healey press conference from 10am.
However, it is David Miliband who has currently stolen the limelight today, as he warns that Afghanistan is becoming a forgotten war – and urges dialogue with the Taliban. He has also written an article for the Sun in which he questions whether or not a 2014 withdrawal from Afghanistan is a good idea. His speech at MIT this evening may be one to watch.
And finally on what looks like a quiet political day (famous last words), 250,000 civil servants could be about to go on strike, as PCS look to ballot their members on industrial action. Could this be a summer of discontent?
