The end of the “Special Relationship”?
“Douglas Alexander, the shadow foreign secretary, will warn that pulling out of the European Union would leave Britain “relegated diplomatically and economically”. Washington is known to have held private concerns about the increasingly Eurosceptic direction of the Conservatives. Those culminated in a major speech in January when David Cameron, the Prime Minister, pledged an in/out referendum after the next general election. Speaking at the Kennedy School of Government in Harvard University, he will say: “Our relationship with the United States has been described as a partnership of the heart, special, unique, and exceptional. “But one thing is certain, the UK’s relationship with the US would be a lot less special if we were outside the EU. In a 21st Century defined by interdependence, isolation in the Atlantic would be anything but splendid for Britain.” – Telegraph
