The Labour Party won a by-election this week. Did you notice? It was a historic win, the first seat Labour had ever won in this area.
On Thursday – the first Labour Party representative on the City of London Corporation was elected. William Campbell-Taylor was elected as to represent Portsoken (near Aldgate) one of the most residential areas in the City of London.
The City of London corporation is traditionally dominated by “independents” – however many of those independent candidates appeared to be decidedly Tory – which led to Labour standing candidates in the seat. Campbell-Taylor, an Anglican priest close to Blue Labour peer Lord Maurice Glasman, may be Labour’s first representative at the heart of the City. But he’s unlikely to be the last.
