Following the news last week that David Sparks has been elected as Chair of the Local Government Authority (LGA), it has been announced today that Councillor Jim McMahon has been elected to replace Sparks as Leader of the LGA Labour Group.
With over ten years of experience as a councillor, and currently leader of Oldham Council, he will officially take over the reigns over from Sparks on 8th July at the LGA Annual Conference.
McMahon, who received nominations from Labour groups in each region of England and from Wales, will represent Labour’s 6778 councillors and 309 Labour groups in Westminster.
Responding to the announcement, he stressed his commitment to defending local government and to striking a better gender balance when it comes to the LGA’s work:
“I would like to thank all the Labour Groups that nominated me, I will work every day to justify your support.
I stood for Leader of the LGA Labour Group to give a voice for Labour Councillors, to stand up for local government and to deliver the reforms we need in our national representation.
I am looking forward to building a strong leadership team within the LGA Labour Group representing all parts of local government, I want to ensure that we encourage more women leaders to become involved in our work.”
