
News emerged last week that tens of thousands of Iraqis were stranded on a mountain having fled slaughter at the hands of ISIL (also known as ISIS, or the Islamic State). Douglas Alexander released a statement on Friday, giving Labour’s backing to limited air strikes from the US and the delivery of humanitarian aid to those who needed it. Meanwhile, on LabourList, Tom Watson became the first MP to call for the recall of Parliament to discuss the unfolding crisis. Over the weekend, several more have demanded the same. However, Labour have so far resisted joining in these calls.
Boris Johnson has announced that he is seeking a Parliamentary seat to stand in next year, renewing discussion about his potential to be talk of him becoming the next Conservative leader.

It has also come to light that 30 of Labour’s MPs have announced they will be standing down at the next election – 15% of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP).
