Sadiq Khan, the Shadow Minister for London, has launched a campaign calling for Londoner to be given more say over their own future.
Dubbed ‘Let Londoners Run London‘, Khan’s campaign says powers should to be taken away from Whitehall and given to London’s government. He argues in a video on the website for the campaign, Khan points out that of the taxes raised in London 7% stay in the city, in comparison to 50% in New York and 70% in Tokyo.
He says that in order to minimise inequality between the rich and the poor, it is essential for London to have more control over the money it raises through taxation but also over the NHS, education and training.
This is just the latest move by Khan – who alongside being shadow minister for London is one of the people who it’s rumoured will eventually announce they’re running for mayor – to focus on the capital, such as his London-wide campaign to protect the NHS.
And it’s a campaign he’s running personally – rather than in his official capacity as Shadow London Minister, this will only heighten further expectations that he’ll be running next year. Here’s the video Khan has produced to launch the campaign:
