Tessa Jowell remains favourite to run for London Mayor among the capital’s Labour voters, according to a new poll. A YouGov poll for the Evening Standard has Jowell increasing her support to 26%, well ahead of nearest contender Diane Abbott. The results given do not include those who do not plan to vote Labour next year or don’t knows:
Tessa Jowell 26%, Diane Abbott 20%, David Lammy 17%, Sadiq Khan 11%, Margaret Hodge 10%, Doreen Lawrence 10%
The remaining six per cent of intended votes have not been released, but are likely split between Christian Wolmar and Andrew Adonis, who have commanded similar levels of support in previous polls.
This is the first poll since Jowell and Abbott both confirmed last month that they would be seeking the Labour nomination next year – and a LabourList survey conducted three weeks ago bore out similar results.
The fall off in support for Margaret Hodge and Sadiq Khan could be attributed to the failure of the two to confirm their intentions in the race: while Hodge has hinted she is considering it, Khan seems reluctant to publicly discuss the matter until after the election.
