Hayman is a  Cumbria County Councillor for Howgate and is also Vice-Chair of Cumbria County Council’s children’s scrutiny committee. She is a self-employed communications consultant and has been an active member of the Labour Party for more than 20 years.

Hayman said she was proud to have been chosen by local members to be Labour’s candidate:

“West Cumbria is a special place, facing unique challenges but a bright future. I am determined to secure a fair deal for this area. My priorities will be to fight for local jobs, support West Cumberland Hospital, and if elected, voting to scrap the hated bedroom tax.

“Over the next couple of months, I’ll be campaigning hard on doorsteps across the constituency talking to voters about the issues they care about. Workington constituency needs a Labour government to rescue our NHS, give our young people that chances they deserve and tackle the cost of living crisis which has left families here £1600 worse off a year. I can’t wait to get started with the campaign.”

She replaces Tony Cunningham, who announced he’d be stepping down last year after serving as the area’s MP for fourteen years. Aside from one three year period when following a by-election Conservative Richard Page was elected as the MP, Workington has been a Labour seat since 1918.

Congratulations to Sue and commiserations to the other candidates.
