Last night the Conservatives held one of their infamous fundraising ‘gala’, the theme was a Black and White Ball and guests paid up to a sizeable £15,000 for a table.
But the price it costs to dine with the Cabinet isn’t the only thing interesting about one of the ways the Tories fill their election coffers – just take a look at their list of auction prizes.
It’s reported the Tories tried to keep a list of 73 prizes sold off during the dinner – along how much the prizes eventually went for – under wraps. But Buzzfeed managed to get their hands on the information.
One auction winner reportedly paid £220,000 for a trip to Majorca to a 17th century fortress with five bedrooms, five other houses, 2 swimming pools and a helipad. Another reportedly forked out £210,000 for a small bronze statue of Margaret Thatcher.
Other auction prizes included the downright bizarre – like chance to complete an ‘Iron Man’-style challenge with the Department for Work and Pension’s very own Iain Duncan Smith or the opportunity to go on a 5k morning run with Nicky Morgan.
Scattered among the auction list were also lavish prizes showing the Tories true (but in some cases, still strange) colours: a JCB digger, a tour of Downtown Abbey and tea with Julian Fellowes (who created the programme and is a Conservative member of the House of Lords) and a number of hunting-themed options – from pheasant shooting for 8 to deer hunting.
