This week is Labour’s NHS week – and the party will seek to highlight the damage that the Tories will do to the health service.
This will include a new poster and a dossier which will highlight that the Tories are deceiving the electorate when it comes to NHS spending.
In particular the party will point out that the Conservative’s plan to double the pace of cuts in 2016 would seriously damage the NHS and that they won’t explain where the extra spending will come from.
This comes after a number of letters from different groups of health care professionals who have said the NHS is facing a huge funding crisis and that this is, in part, due to the fact that the Coalition failed to keep their promises on the NHS.
They will also reveal new research which gives an insight into thoughts on privatisation of the NHS within the Conservative party. This is in the form of a survey of 115 Tory councillors, carried out by Labour, showed more than a quarter are willing to admit they support further charging and privatisation. 26 councillors said they support introducing charges for NHS services, 12 said they support privatisation or increased use of the private sector and 6 said they want to make cuts to the NHS.
Ed Miliband, in his speech to the Scottish Trades Union Congress tomorrow will say:
“The Tory plans on the NHS are a double deceit.
“They are not being straight about their extreme plans to double the cuts to public services next year.
“And they are not being straight when they promise to protect the NHS, but cannot say where a penny of additional money will come from.
“This double deceit is a double danger to the NHS. They have extreme spending plans and they can’t tell us where the money is coming from.
“David Cameron poses a risk to the very fabric and foundation of our NHS.
“That’s why we will fight every day to 7th May to stop a Tory plan that threatens our NHS.
“And it’s why we have a different approach.
“A fully funded plan, with a mansion tax on properties worth over £2million to pay for more nurses and doctors in every part of the United Kingdom.”
