Steve Rotheram, the Liverpool Walton MP and Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Jeremy Corbyn, has been selected as Labour’s candidate for next year’s Liverpool city region mayoral election.
Rotheram triumphed over Joe Anderson, the current Liverpool City Mayor, and Luciana Berger, the Liverpool Wavertree MP, with the result going to the second round of voting.
The result was:
First Round – Berger – 24.2% Anderson – 33.1% Rotheram – 40.9%
Final Round – Anderson – 41.2% Rotheram – 59.8%
Reacting to the result, Rotheram said: “I am extremely grateful to the thousands of party members who have chosen to place their trust in me and I am determined not to let them down.”
