Corbyn vs Smith – LabourList readers react to this week’s leadership hustings

Jeremy Corbyn Owen Smith

During Thursday evening’s leadership debate we asked readers for their reaction to the candidates’ hustings. Here are a pick of your contributions:

“There is just no getting away from the fact that Smith resigned and Corbyn has been trying to do what he was elected to do. He simply has no credibility as someone trying to make the country better after doing that. And now he is dissing rallies and making a ridiculous swipe about tee-shirts. He has no real moral high ground to stand on and is reduced to that.” – Meg

“I take my hat off to you Jeremy. You are so calm despite taunting and personalisation. Owen please stick to policy, I get so turned off when you whinge about Corbyn.” – Prakash Bijwe

“Smith landed some good punches over competence and popularity within Labour

“But he also committed some howlers. I am convinced that he’s too cavalier over the 2nd referendum and turning every single question to ‘well you’ve got to be in power’ gets boring after a while. We heard you the first time Owen, you can spend time on your concrete proposals instead.” – Mara Naile-Akim

“Corbyn has never subscribed to collective responsibility before, so would be very unlikely to start now to vote as a team player: Smith clearly takes collective responsibility more seriously and prefers not to break that by promising to vote for whatever reactionary scheme Corbyn might come up in any given week, without consulting his cabinet, in future.” – David Battley
