Agreement reached on registered supporters

Refounding Labour2By Mark Ferguson / @markfergusonuk

Update: An earlier version of this post stated that registered supporters would receive 3% of the electoral college once 3,000 supporters were signed up – the actual number is 50,000.

Update: We also understand that the NEC have also agreed to maintain current 50/50 union/member split on conference votes

Today the Labour NEC met for a final discussion before conference of the registered supporters proposals. The final details were decided at today’s meeting, and are as follows:

Once there are 50,000 registered supporters, they will receive 3% of the vote in the leadership contest. This could rise as high as 10% depending on the number of registered supporters. The percentage for supporters votes will be taken equally from the three existing branches of the electoral college.

We also understand that the system will be designed to ensure that no registered supporter has more sway of the result of the leadership contest than either a member or an affiliate.

We’ll bring you further details as we can ahead of Sunday’s debate and vote.
