The former chancellor Alistair Darling has just endorsed David Miliband for the Labour Party leadership.
Writing on David Miliband’s website, Darling said:
“He has the maturity and humility to bring together different talents irrespective of whether they support him. He will re-engage Labour with the public, particularly those with whom we have lost touch. David has always campaigned and argued positively for the Labour Party and that is the leadership we need… He has the judgement and gravitas to make tough decisions, which is an essential quality for the next leader of our party.
Darling was one of the three ministers who served in the cabinet for the full thirteen years of Labour rule, alongside Jack Straw and Gordon Brown. As a respected figure in his own right, his endorsement will have been sought by all the candidates, but I understand it’s been in the bag for Miliband for some weeks.
Darling’s support will bring David Miliband’s support in the House to 64.
