Edwina Currie correctly stated that Tory disunity as well as splits on Europe would cost them support. Looks like her words are starting to ring true about Cameron.

PMQs Verdict: Osborne falters, Eagle soars and Trident lurks in the background

Those in the Commons chamber today were slightly taken aback by the wall of noise that greeted Angela Eagle as she stood up to the despatch box this afternoon. It is unusual these days to see Labour MPs in such vocal spirit, and they seemed to be making up for lost time with extra volume. As much as the absence of Corbyn could account for this (the Labour leader does not encourage noise from his backbenchers, and it is not […]

Dan Jarvis: As a former soldier I back the EU as a project for peace

This is a speech entitled The patriotic choice for a more secure Britain delivered by Dan Jarvis at the Royal British Legion in Mitcham, south London, today. I want to begin by thanking Siobhain [McDonagh] for her welcome. Since 1997 she has served as MP for Mitcham and Morden, working tirelessly for her constituents and it’s a great pleasure to be in her constituency today. McDonnell, the shadow Chancellor, said such losses would be the inevitable […]

Why Diane Abbott was right to put a coup in the world’s fourth largest democracy back on the British progressive political agenda

The shocking overthrow of democracy a fortnight ago in the world’s fourth largest democratic nation has been placed full square on the British progressive political agenda – thanks to the very necessary intervention of both the TUC and Diane Abbott. For it is crucial, from any democratic perspective, that the world begins to speak out more forcefully against the political coup d’état which is now robbing Brazilians of their democracy and threatening their human rights. Over the past 13 years, […]

Brexit would be a “gift to Putin”, Dan Jarvis warns

A vote to leave the EU would prompt fresh uncertainty over Britain’s security, Dan Jarvis will warn on Wednesday. In a speech in South London the former paratrooper will spell out how he believes an Out vote would be seen by Britain’s enemies as a sign the nation does not take seriously its global alliances against emerging threats. Jarvis will lay out a stark message that “Britain leaving the EU would undermine vital efforts for peace and stability”, and would be […]
