Labour MP brands Tory MP an “idiot” during Queen’s Speech debate

12th June, 2014 3:21 pm

The Queen’s Speech debate is drawing to a close in the Commons, but it’s not been without rancour.

This afternoon Labour MP Ian Austin referred to a Tory opponent as “the idiot from Bournemouth”. He was forced to apologise by the Deputy Speaker Dawn Primarolo – although he apologised to her, not the Tory MP in question. Here’s the exchange:

  • Monkey_Bach

Less insult than fair comment, surely. Eeek.

  • ColinAdkins

Why do MPs bow to these redundant conventions? They appear to have a robust manner in the Australian parliament if only they could ditch the sometimes sexist and racist bagage.

  • derekemery

I think all MPs should dress up for their parts:- clip-on bone though the nose, face and body paint, grass skirts , and polystyrene spears to shake at the opposition in time in time with “Hear, hear”

  • Sandy_Jamieson

I wonder what she called John Reid after his amorous advance to all those years ago

  • Gerald Allen

We note that, so far, there has been no attempt by the Tory to sue Ian Austin for slander. Keep up the good work Iain.

Here’s that “positive campaign” Cameron has been bigging up

Only two days ago, David Cameron claimed that the Tories were running the “most positive campaign”: Lets see how the next couple of days have panned out: Well that doesn’t sound very positive. Neither does that. Maybe we should go back a bit further? Maybe the right-wing media (who absolutely don’t print whatever the Tories want them to) is the wrong place to look for this positive campaign? So lets take a look at the five main Tory Twitter feeds. presumably […]

Labour have ‘best policies’ on NHS, education, immigration and benefits, poll suggests

Labour lead on four of the six policy areas considered most important by voters, according to latest polling. Ipsos MORI research for the Evening Standard show that on the topics of healthcare/NHS/hospitals, education and schools, asylum and immigration, and benefits Labour are judged to have better policies than the Conservatives, UKIP or the Lib Dems. However, on managing the economy and taxation, the Tories still hold a lead. Health is by far the most important issue for voters, with 47% considering […]

Will The Sun just say anything to stop people voting Labour? Part Two

We’ve already covered Murdoch’s reported orders that The Sun should do whatever they can to stop Miliband winning, but the gap between today’s Sun in Scotland and the one on sale in the rest of the UK is absolutely amazing. It’s like they’ve forgotten that the internet exist, and people can compare the two. Especially since we’ve seen this happen less than a month ago. Here’s the front page of today’s Scottish Sun – where they seem pretty positive about […]
