“She was our Jo” – Labour’s 2015 MPs make video to honour their friend Jo Cox

Labour MPs elected since last year’s general election have today released a video tribute to Jo Cox, who was also elected to Parliament last May.

In the video, which was published this afternoon and features some of her closest friends, Cox’s colleagues describe her as “a mother, a fighter, a campaigner,an internationalist, a feminist, a proud Yorkshire lass”.

They also use the opportunity to say that “we now have the chance to show the world, and each other, the country we want – open, tender and inclusive”.

It finishes with a quote from Jo’s maiden speech, which has come to sum up her attitude towards politics in the days since her death.

“We wish to honour or friend, and fight for what she stood for. Across our communities, across our country, and across our world: we are far more united, and we have far more in common than that which divides us.

“She was our Jo.”

The short film was organised by Wes Streeting, who said: “As a new generation of Labour MPs who entered parliament with Jo, we want to honour her memory by fighting for what she stood for. She was a relentless campaigner for equality and human rights in Britain, and around the world.”

The camaraderie and togetherness of the party’s 2015 intake has been noted before now, with a shared text message group becoming a platform for discussion and debate – particularly during last year’s leadership contest. That comradeship is on full show in the video, which you can watch here:
