Backbench Labour MPs are this afternoon circulating a letter calling for Gordon Brown to step aside as leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister.
The Guardian is reporting that the letter could be delivered to Downing Street with as many as 80 signatures as early as tonight.
But some backbenchers are refusing to sign the document because they think some of the names already on the list are “too leftwing”.
Although there is no physical copy of the letter, an email address is being handed out to which sympathetic MPs can send an email, saying they support a single sentence statement that they would like Gordon Brown to stand down.
